Historical context
The Malakov Kurgan is a hill to the east of Sebastopol, with a fortification (the Round Tower) on it. It was key to the defences, and Sebastopol finally fell in 1855 when the French stormed it after an 11 month siege. See the Illustrated London News, 26 June 1869, p.641.
Simpson revisited the Crimea in April 1869, with the Prince and Princess of Wales: see Autobiography, 1903, pp.216-23. His account describes many of the subjects of these sketches. The Illustrated London News, from 22 May - 24 July 1869, reproduced illustrations derived from these sketches, with commentary by Simpson.
