Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Plates with applied egg-cups were made in Italy from the beginning of the 17th century. Traditionally, the presence of two egg-cups on one plate refers to the plate being used by a couple at a formal dinner.

This plate would have been part of a large matching service with many different types of wares.

The light blue ground, known in Italian as berettino, was obtained by adding cobalt blue to the otherwise white, glaze.

Similar wares were made in different centres of production, most notably Deruta and Faenza, where examples of the shape, with petal-shaped egg-cups were made in plain white.
