Historical context
During the Second Anglo-Sikh War, Lieutenant Edwardes raised a force of Sikhs and Muslims who laid siege to Multan and held the rebellious governor Mulraj in check. Edwardes was voted by the Court of Directors of the East India Company a special gold medal in recognition of his services.
At the time of issue the Court of Directors instructed that excepting the die sinker's copy, only one medal be struck, with a silver proof going to the British Museum.
Colonel Murray later had the die sinker's copy in his collection.
