Dom Sylvester Houedard was a Benedictine monk and eminent theologian, but also a pioneer, in Britain, of concrete poetry, a poetic form in which the arrangement of words and letters in a pattern on the page relates to the meaning or emotional impact of the poem. Using concrete poetry as a kind of springboard Houedard developed a way of making more purely abstract or pictorial images with the typewriter keys.

It is not clear if this blotter was used as such or not. It was described at the time of acquisition in the Circulation Department Register as one of a series of typewrtier drawings making use of mirror images with a mixture of straight and reversed letters and words, with inkspots and one blot.

Physical description

Blotter, [laminated between sheets of clear plastic] greenish in colour, with miscellaneous patterns on it, made up of typed letters including shapes suggesting a bird, a house, spirals and even a landscape. it is two or three sheets thick although only one of these is visible.
The description 'reversal poem' was ascribed on acquisition by the Circulation Dept. in 1971.
