Gallery label
Employees of the East India Company frequently commissioned local artists to record life in India during the 18th and 19th centuries. These works combine Indian and British styles, and are known as Kampani Kalam or Company Paintings. This painting shows a Malabar church brahmin, recognisable by his religious body markings and delicately drawn yajnopavita (sacred thread) hanging over his stomach. His wife wears a bandhani (tie-dyed) sari, which was popular at the time.(23/03/2022)
