Figure
early 19th century (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This was formerly catalogued as a Jain Goddess (Yakshi), but it probably represents Radha or a female attendant. The figure stands straight with her right hand raised and the left reaching forwards. Both hands are empty but probably held items, perhaps a lotus or chauri. The shape of her face, topknot, larger earrings and divided dhoti with punched decoration are typical Gujarati features. The feet have seperate flat bases, clearly intended to slot into a larger base. Dark brass colour, moderate wear.
Standing upright female figure facing to the front with feet together. She wears a skirt-cloth diapered with small circles, a choli, girdle and jewellery. The crown of the head is surmounted by a vertical lotus-bud, whilst the hair hangs way from the back in a thick plait ending in a tassel. In the ears are large disc earrings. The right forearm is upheld and the left projects horizontally. The fingers of the hands form circular holes for the insertion of fresh flowers.
