It is full length and decolleté with narrow silver ribbon shoulder straps and a straight skirt, draped over at the side to give room for movement.

Object history
Made for Margaret, Duchess of Argyll, to wear to the Coronation ceremony, along with custom-designed ceremonial robes. She stated that she was the only guest to have both her gown and her peeress robes designed anew for the ceremony. This gown and the robes were given to Cecil Beaton for his exhibition.
