The design of this vase, probably used as a pen holder, became particularly popular in London at the end of the century; several objects of various size and function listed in the 1881 catalogue of the store Liberty's bear the same pattern.

Purchased from N. McLeod (7 Wood Street, Chelsea), accessioned in 1893. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Asia Department registers, as part of a 2022 provenance research project.
