WARP: white wool; Z2S; 14 threads per inch (53 per dm).

WEFT: dark brown wool; Z spun, unplied; 3 shoots after each row of knots; 9 rows of knots per inch (36 per dm).

PILE: wool; 8 colours: red, light red, dark green, dark blue, dark pink (faded to cream), dark brown, brown, cream; asymmetrical knot open to the left and tied around two threads with some jufti knots down the left-hand order; 63 knots per sq. inch (954 per sq. dm).

SIDE FINISH: Left: cut. Right: returned wefts.

END FINISH: cut.

DESIGN: field: brown ground; off centre cream cross with brown centre. Five bands of six-sided cartouches, four to a band and alternating in colour (red/dark brown) and in direction (red sloping to bottom left and dark brown to bottom right). The latter contains an S-shape in blue and the former a Z-shape also in blue. Stepped crosses, as in centre, framed by four cartouches.

Border: adjoining lozenges outlined in dark blue or dark green. Each contains a smaller dark blue or dark green space between outer lozenges contains emphasised triangle but at top and bottom triangle is dissected by vertical bar. NB: inner guard stripe only. Composed of alternating cream and dark brown knots, except for bottom stripe and adjacent 2.5 cms. of side stripe which is probably embroidered but with similar effect.
