This asymmetrical draped and folded blue wool felt hat is trimmed with felt flowers in blue, green and coloured felt and was worn tipped over one eye .

Hat styles of the early 1940s followed the styles of the previous decade. There was austerity in Europe and some, though less severe, in the United States. In the early 1940s it remained fashionable for hats to be small, worn asymmetrically and sit on the crown of the head.

The hat was made by Madame Lylett Rivière who had establishments in both Paris and New York. The hat was worn and donated by American-born Mrs Margaret Abegg who together with her husband Werner founded the Abegg-Stiftung, a leading historical textile collection near Berne in Switzerland .
