The Praya Grande was the principal waterfront promenade when the Portuguese held the peninsula of Macao. Here it curves around on the right hand side of the painting. The port and the boats are seen on the calm waters, and the mountains form a distant backdrop to the scene. The artist has painted the view from the northern end of the Praya Grande, facing away from the Chinese mainland.
