Physical description

An attached label reads 'This picture is a facsimile of a room in the house of D. Kong, the collector of the salt revenue and one of the grandees of Ningpo. The house in question was well known to foreigners ... [who called it] the "Grotto House"from being divided into four or five parts ... connected by artificial rocky passages...'
The manipulation of perspective, the relative sizes of the figures, the broad areas of plain colour all point to a style of Chinese popular painting of which little is known.
