This painting is from an album that contains 50 pictures showing Chinese domestic interiors and garden scenes. They were produced to satisfy the curiosity of westerners who wanted to know more about China. The seated man is the grandfather, who is about to embrace his grandson. An older boy stands nearby holding a fish-shaped kite.

Painting, rectangular in shape and depicting an interior scene. A seated figure in grey, greets a small child dressed in red. A figure in blue gestures for the child to move forwards. The third small figure carries a kite in the shape of a fish.

Part of an album numbered D.14-1883 to D.63-1883. It is important to note that D.14-1883 refers to both the album cover and the first painting inside.
Purchased from Parsons & Sons, accessioned in 1903. This acquisition information reflects that found in the Asia Department registers, as part of a 2022 provenance research project.
