This bronze medal by the French medallist Oudiné was dedicated to the memory of Napoleon I by the city of Paris. The obverse of this medal reproduces the Apotheosis of the Emperor Napoleon I, a fresco painted in 1853 by French neoclassical artist J.A.D. Ingres, to adorn the ceiling of the hall of the Hotel de Ville in Paris until its destruction by fire during the Commune in 1871. The sketch for this painting still exists in the collection of the Musée Carnavalet in Paris.
Eugène André Oudiné (1810–1887), French sculptor and medallist. Many of his sculptures are seen in public spaces in Paris. For the Hotel de Ville in Paris he executed fourteen bas-reliefs, which were destroyed in 1871.
