Plaque
ca. 1490 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
This plaque was probably one of many originally made to decorate a cross. Separated and without context, it was later collected as an interesting artefact in its own right. It shows Saint Mathew holding a scroll bearing his name. The copper has been covered with a thin layer of gold. The colouring was produced by champlevé, or 'raised field', enamelling. The design was engraved in sections, filled with coloured enamel powders and then fired to create the hard and shiny surface.
