Physical description

Wedding dress of ivory silk satin and with a sprig of artificial orange blossom. The dress is covered with matching net on which is a piped pattern. High necked dress with elbow-length sleeves, and with a square ended train. Applied silk rouleau in swooping and elongated Art Nouveau scrolls. Trimmed with a tasselled fringe. The bodice is lined with white cotton and is boned, and with the maker's name on the tape. It fastens at the back with hooks and eyes.

Object history note

Worn by Elaine Campbell Wakefield for her marriage to Claude Llewellyn Thornley Phillips at St George's, Hanover Square, 27th July 1908.

The bride went to Madame Meynier on the recommendation of her friend, the wife of the American Consul. This was through choice rather than convenience, as the bride had to travel from England to Lille to organise her dress.
