Dazzling light shines on this perfectly chic New York couple. The reflective surface behind them enhances the play of light, shadow and form. Bassman had a different relationship with the models to her male contemporaries: ‘Women didn’t have to seduce me the way they did male photographers. There was a kind of inner calm between the model and myself.’
