This propaganda poster was printed in Shanghai in 1971, during the period of the Cultural Revolution (1966-76). At this time, graphic art was heavily used to promote mass campaigns and divulgate revolutionary ideas.

In this poster a large crowd of people is gathering in Tiananmen square for a celebration in honour of Chairman Mao; most of them hold the book 'Quotations from Chairman Mao' (Mao zhuxi yulu), generally known as 'Red Book'. Propaganda posters centred on the figure of Mao Zedong contributed to foster his personality cult, which reached enormous proportions during the Cultural Revolution.
