Snuffbox
1780 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
The skillful setting of hardstones within this box associates it with the work of Johann Christian Neuber, who worked in Dresden. The design, however, particularly the pierced gold panels, is not typical and the box may not be his work. A portrait of Frederick Augustus III, who became elector of Saxony in 1763, is set into the inside of the lid.
Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.
