Object history | "This is one of the earliest known drawings by Sandby. William Sandby in his History of the Royal Academy states that Paul Sandby entered the Military Drawing Office of the Tower of London in 1746 [1741?]. In the Print Room at the British Museum there are one or two other drawings inscribed 'Presented to the Board as a specimin of Mr Paul Sandby's performance. Vide Minutes, 12 March, 1746'. The Board in question was the Board of Ordance, to whom this and other drawings were presented as specimens of the artist's ability for the part of draughtsman to the Military Survey in Scotland. Sandby went as draughtsman to the Scotish Survey from the Tower" - LGD. |
