This is a statuette of a female saint, made in the Lower Rheine or Meuse region in about 1340-1360. The identity of this female saint remains unclear in the absence of any distinctive attributes. This, together with the statuettes of St. John the Baptist and another female saint (132, 134-1869) undoubtedly come from an altarpiece, or retable, and probably flanked seated figures of Christ and the Virgin, together with other figures on either side of the central group. The selection of particular saints on any one altarpiece was usually determined by the dedication of the altar itself, and locally venerated saints were often represented alongside the more famous apostles.
