It was common for entrances to Hindu, Jain and Buddhist temples throughout India and Sri Lanka to be guarded by threatening figures intended as a protection for the sacred space within. Here, in a Buddhist context, the gurardians are female and relatively peaceful, though they nevertheless brandish a club in one hand.
