The ewer is globular with widely spreading concave rim and spout, loop handle of flattened section rising a little above the rim. The basin has a similar rim. Both pieces are painted with bouquets of roses, irises and other flowers. Borders of husk pattern and festooned dots with foliations and formal flowers in blue, green, pink and purple. On the handle, formal flowers in gilt.

Ewer and basin, enamelled and gilt soft-paste porcelain, painting attributed to William Billingsley, manufactured by William Duesbury & Co., Derby, 1790-1795
Physical description
The ewer is globular with widely spreading concave rim and spout, loop handle of flattened section rising a little above the rim. The basin has a similar rim. Both pieces are painted with bouquets of roses, irises and other flowers. Borders of husk pattern and festooned dots with foliations and formal flowers in blue, green, pink and purple. On the handle, formal flowers in gilt.

  • 'D' surmounted by a crown and crossed batons with six dots (Maker's mark painted (overglaze) in purple on underside of both pieces)
  • '172' (Pattern number painted (overglaze) in purple on the foot ring of the basin)
