Object history
Like the views in Mortham Tower (cat.nos.62a, 62b), these interiors were painted on the spot during one of Cope's sketching tours. By 1840, artists were touring Britain in search of subjects, not only in the outdoor landscape, but in the 'picturesqueness', even quaintness, of the interiors of old buildings, preferably the timbered, plastered and thatched houses of the period 1300-1600. This love of such buildings still flourishes among British tourists from home and abroad today, and is often thought to be a peculiarly British phenomenon.
