This Scottish painter was both an important patron, and a precursor of the Pre-Raphaelites, in his insistence on sincerity of subject-matter and attention to detail, but in turn he was influenced by them, particularly the Ruskinian policy of 'going to nature, rejecting nothing, selecting nothing'.
