Given by the Friends' War Victims Relief Expedition

This bag, with its brightly coloured, geometric decoration, is typical of a group of objects acquired from the War Victims Relief Expedition in 1918. This examples was worked by Mlle Philippe of Sermaize-les-Bains in the Marne district, a 'sinistrée', or victim of the First World War. She was paid 8 francs or 7 shillings for the bag which was then given to the Museum. This project for helping war victims to support themselves seems to have involved leading English designers: the painter Roger Fry is said to have designed some of the bags and tray cloths collected by the Museum.
