Place of origin |
Speed the Plough (1800), a five-act sentimental comedy, was Morton's greatest success. De Wilde made a speciality of theatrical portraits. Unlike Hamilton's depiction of Mrs Siddons [cat.no.168], which is less a portrait than an evocation of Tragedy, De Wilde's picture is an unflinching study of a character actress which makes no attempt to flatter its subject.
