Physical description
Fragments of a length of woven silk, with a flower design brocaded with stripes of gold and coloured silk thread on red silk ground. The elaborate type of pattern shown here is called meenakari (enamelling).
Marks and inscriptions
(Both Rasulpura and Gaighat are regions of Varanasi.)
Translation
Golden creeper brocade in enamelled flower pattern. The work of Budhu, resdient of Rasulpura for Mu'in Lal Mahajan, resident of Gaighat.
Transliteration
Beil kamkhab tila'i minakar rang-i gulnar/ karigari [...h] Budhu sakin-i Rasulpura/ ma'rifet Mu'in Lal Mahajan sakin-i Gaighat.

Exhibited at the Great Exhibition, 1851.
Historical context
A sample of this fabric was included in John Forbes Watson's second series of 'The Textile Manufactures and Costumes of the People of India', published in 1873-77.
