Chair

1690-1700 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Turned, caned chair, the back uprights raked above and below the seat, and carved with a pronounced extra rake at the foot. The arched and pierced top rail is carved with symmetrical S- and C-scrolls, and two incised trefoil motifs on a punched ground. The outer uprights of the back are turned at the top with a cone above a reel, and at the bottom with a reel. The front and side seat rails each with an applied water leaf moulding (non-original). The arched and pierced front rail with symmetrical S-scrolls. The front legs turned with a baluster above a rectangular block, with scrolled 'braganza' foot. With a dark stain overall.

Modifications
Screw reinforement to underside of front feet. Loss of left lower corner of crest rail. The back feet tipped. The three seat rail mouldings are added; tack holes in the back rail suggest that the chair had at some point an upholstered seat (since removed). The inner stiles and bottom rail of the back apparently replaced. The cane panels presumed to be replaced.

Object history
Bequeathed by Mr Richard James Witty (a solicitor), of Riverside House, Mortlake, London) who offered to bequeath his collection of 15 high-backed Stuart chairs to the Museum. Oliver Brackett's report (10 August 1915) makes it clear that their fragile condition meant that they were not in regular use by the owner. 10 chairs were bequeathed after his death in 1935 (W.29 to 38 -1915)

On loan to Whitehall, Cheam, from 1980 until 2016
