Hebe

Statue
1750-1800 (made)

Place of origin

In Greek mythology, Hebe was the cupbearer for the gods and goddesses of Mount Olympus where they resided. So she is usually, as here, shown with a cup in her hand. Here she also holds a wine vessel in her left hand. This white marble statue is French, and is a work after Jacques-François-Joseph Saly (1717-76). In fact it is a reproduction of a statue commissioned by Mme de Pompadour, the mistress of Louis XV, for the Chateau de Bellevue, built for her in 1750. The model for this statue was exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1753 and the statue was much copied in the second half of the eighteenth century.

Historical context
M. Louis Réau has identified this statuette as a reproduction of the statue in 'pierre de tonnerre', 6 feet high, by Saly (1717-1776), commissioned by Mme de Pompadour for the Chateau of Bellevue. The model was exhibited in the salon of 1753. Numerous replicas and smaller versions are listed in sale catalogues of 18th century.
M. Réau mentions a life-size plaster version in the possession of M. Germain Seligmann in Paris (1927) and a reduction in Sèvres biscuit porcelain.
