Brief description
Lapis lazuli with silver-gilt mounts, Italian, the bowl and lid, and mounts on bowl possibly 1580-1600; the foot and stem later, ca. 1780 or later; the mounts English, T. Phipps and E. Robinson, ca. 1800.
Physical description
Shallow bowl with cover of lapis lazuli, the top of the lid and outer surface of the bowl carved with gadroons and acanthus leaves. At an unspecified stage in the object's history, the lid was broken, and was cut down and remounted. The fluted lid mounts, with a beaded rim, match the beaded rim round the foot, the fluted stem, and the vase-shaped knop with its beaded edge. The mounts on the bowl are different and are probably contemporary with the bowl.
