Cylindrical with loop handle. The handle banded with pewter, and cover of the same metal engraved with the initials 'W.D.'. Painted with a flower and foliage on a speckled manganese ground in each of three panels outlined in yellow and surrounded by flowers and foliage; in green, yellow, blue and black, the handle speckled with manganese. The tankard was probably fitted with a pewter base which is now missing.

Historical context | (TAB) There is no known 'N-' mark used at Erfurt. However, there is a tankard with very similar decoration which is attributed to Erfurt is exactly the same height as this example (see Schwarze in Refs.). |
