Roundel

second half of the 12th century (carved)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Roundels such as the present example were made in large number in Venice between the eleventh and the thirteenth centuries, where they were used to adorn the facades of mainly secular buildings. Despite the large numbers of these decorative roundels, the exact composition of the present relief doe not appear to be parallelled amongst the known corpus. The style of the sculpture is also somewhat different from the majority of pieces, showing a more energetic, less rigid character.
