Physical description

Hemispherical shape with flattened base and sides slightly concave; small foot ring; two thich moulded circular loop handles, set vertically; pointed oval colander strainer at one side within; flat domed lid with central mushroom knob. The outside of the bowl is painted with chinoisserie landscapes and four groups of figures, the lid with four similar scenes at top, bottom and on either side; scroll pattern band about the knob.

[Cover] Flat domed cover and a central mushroom knob with a scroll pattern.

Object history note

Given by Mrs. C. Hemming.
Originally thought to be English (Bristol) and early 18th century. Subsequently attributed to London, about 1670.

Historical context note

Note in Register: A posset pot with similar shape and decoration in the Yorkshire Museum, York is thought to have been painted by Joseph Flower.
