Dish with wide flattish well and vertical short rim, tin-glazed overall. A circular plate with a flat base, steep well and sloping rim. The underside does not have a foot-ring. Painted in blue, green, yellow, orange, black and manganese purple. Queen Zenobia, Queen of Palmyra, taken captive by the Emperor Aurelian. She is near the front of a procession of male and female captives, led by men holding captured trophies. The Emperor Aurelian flows in the rear, carried on a litter. In the background are castles, a lake and a piece of a building with a terminal figure set in front of it. In the extreme foreground are architectural fragments: a relief with a poet's head and two feet from a broken statue. The reverse of the dish is painted in a pinkish-white glaze and a yellow line. Inscribed in blue script on the foot: "ZANOBIA SUBIETA AURELIANO IMPERAETOR/ IN SIEN[M]E COM LI FIGLI. FATO IN PESARO/ 1552".

| Production | Painter called The Zenobia Painter after this dish Fortum, Maiolica, Oxford, 1896, p.152: Another painted with the triumphal march of the Emperor Aurelius [sic] was in the Soltikoff Collection, and signed "Fatto [sic] in Pesaro 1552 Catalogue of the Collection of Prince Pieve Solty Koff, Paris, Hotel Drouot 8th April 1861, lot 704 reads: "Grand Plat: Marche triomphale de l'empereur Aurelien a son retourde de l'expedition de Palmyre.// Au revers on lit: Zanobia Jubieta [sic] Aureliaris imperatore insieme con li Figli. Fatto in Pesaro 1552.// Ce beau plat, remarquable a plus d'un titre, tire un grand interet de cette marque de fabrique qui se boit tres-rarement, bien qu'en dise Passeri, qui voudrait attributer toutes les faiences d' Italie a la fabrique de pesaro, sa patrie. Diain. 43 cent." Bought by Beurdeley for 420 francs. |
