In his left hand, the Christ Child holds an orb, symbol of his role as ‘Saviour of the World’. His missing right arm probably would have been raised in blessing. His pose and clinging drapery show the influence of classical sculpture, as does the supporting tree trunk behind him. He may have stood atop a tabernacle or on an altar.
