Pear-shaped with wide neck, projecting lip, loop handle, spreading fott and domed cover with round knob. Painted in blue, yellow, green and manganese-purple. On the front, enclosed by garlands of forget-me-nots, is a shield of arms, quarterly, 1 and 4 (or, a mermaid carrying an anchor on her shoulder, proper); 2 and 3 (azure, a ship argent); over all an escutcheon of pretence with the charge indistinctly rendered in green with helmet, crest and mantling and an inscription.

Physical description

At the time of acquisition this was considered to be a coffee pot, Swiss and early 19th century. In the 30s/50s it was changed to Durlach, end of 18th century.
A coffee pot in the Karlsruhe Badisches Landesmuseum, dated 1827, has the same form of this coffee pot (see Refs.).
Historical context
(23 Nov.1956) Letter in Register from Gero v. Merhart Bernegg: Xaver Lucas Merhart v. Bernegg lived 1783-1849. His first marriage was in 1806.

A fayence factory was established in Durlach by Johann Adam Benckieser in 1749. It continued in operation until 1840.
