Theophilus Hansen (1813-91) was a Danish architect who settled in Vienna in 1846 and was responsible for a number of buildings in neo-classical style. This service is described in the Museum's printed registers of 1869 as having been 'bought as an example of cheapness of manufacture', although there is no mention of this as the purpose in the acquisition records. The cheapness must have been relative. The decoration is hand-done and one goblet cost 14/- . The service was exhibited in the international exhibition, Paris, 1867.
