Physical description

Travelling cosmetic box (tabikushibako) with a narrow lid that is flush with the sides, of squared form and rounded corners, a removeable inner tray and a drawer that runs roughly three-quarters of its length, wood covered in black lacquer, with a continuous design of long-tailed birds and flowering camellia bushes, the main one growing from the lower side with the tray and extending to the lid in red and gold hiramaki-e (metal powder sprinkled on to a lacquer design before it has hardened so that it is in low relief) and enashiji (nashiji as part of the main design rather than the background) with silver foil, the interior is in black roiro (black lacquer polished to a deep gloss) and the tray edged with fundame lacquer (a matt, densely sprinkled fine gold powder ground); the drawer handle and decorative mounts with a loop on either side of the box are of gilded metal, the latter originally intended for an elabprate silk cord, now missing.
