Plate

1534 (dated)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The initials BM on the back of this dish are those of Baldassarre Manara, the most famous istoriato painter from Faenza. He is documented in the city from 1526 to his death around 1547.
The unusual decoration of this dish, with three coat of arms, recurs on another plate which also has the name F ATHANASIUS inscribed on the back; this is likely to be the name of the first owner of the two dishes, which were probably part of a large dinner service.
