This hanging is one of a group of four chintz panels of the same design which were acquired from Ashburnham Place in Sussex. They appear to have been cut to sizes suitable for use as bed-hangings. Another set of hangings from Ashburnham Place have the closely related designs embroidered in chain-stitch (IS.152-1953 and IS.155-1953). Both sets are divided between the V&A, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Calico Museum, Ahmedabad, and the Cooper Hewitt Museum, New York.

Formerly in the possession of the Ashburnham family at Ashburnham House, Sussex.
Historical context
When auctioned at Ashburnham House in 1952 there were three matching panels which are now divided between Museums in India at the Calico Museums of Textiles Ahmedabad: acc no. 324, and the USA: Museum of Fine Arts, Boston: acc no. 53, 2201 and Cooper Hewitt Museum, New York: acc no. 1953. 123.1
Production
Made for the Western market. It has also been suggested that it was made in Gujarat, N.W. India, but the hand-drawing and dyeing techniques used suggest that South-East india is more probable.
