Place of origin

This type of large dishes called piatti da pompa were produced in Deruta for most of the 16th century. They often show idealised portraits of women, inspired by the paintings of Perugino and Pinturicchio. These dishes commonly have scrolls with moralising inscriptions and proverbs, in Latin or Italian. This beautifully painted dish might have been given to a girl called 'Susanna' (the female name appearing on the scroll) as a present for her bethrothal or wedding.
