Mosaic
second half 13th century (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
The marble panel was acquired in Rome and probably formed part of a choir screen or altar-frontal in a church. Fragments of gilt and turquoise- coloured glass, agate and cornelian are inset in the outer border. There is a panel of similar design in the Cathedral, Anagni.
The cement around the tesserae has been worn away down the centre suggesting that the panel was originally set vertically.
