This bag has been recycled from an early 17th-century one. The embroidery with scrolls in silver-gilt thread and flowers and birds worked in coloured silks is characteristic of the period 1600-1650. The shape of the original bag has been cut and remodelled sometime in the late 17th or early 18th century to hold a keepsake or perhaps a watch.

Physical description | A bag made of 2 pieces cut into shield-shaped panels, inverted and sewn together in the late 17th or early 18th century. Made from an early 17th-c bag of linen with tent stitch silver thread ground with plaited-braid stitch scrolls in silver-gilt thread and flowers in coloured silks with silver purl centres. The panels were once lined with red silk. |
