This bronze medal was struck to commemorate the 300 year anniversary of the University of Jena in 1858. The obverse side of the medal depicts Elector Johann Friedrich the Magnaminous, in profile. On the reverse side the four heads of the House of Saxony are shown with alongside medallions, a crown, amorial shields and branches. It was designed and executed by Ferdinand Helfricht, medallist to the Court at Gotha.

The University of Jena was founded in 1548 and in the eighteenth century became a center for idealistic philosophy as well as early Romanticism fostered by professors such as Fichte, Hegel, Schiller and Schelling.
