Place of origin

During the Renaissance collectibles such as medals, gems and antique coins were used by Italian scholar's to furnish their studies. Some were kept on the desk, while others were stored in cupboards, or placed on shelves ready to be lifted down and admired or used.

Paul II, who was Pope between 1464 and 1471 was an important patron of the arts. His splendid collection, housed in his palace in Rome, the Palazzo Venezia, included goldsmiths' work, gems and cameos. Much of this collection was later owned by Lorenzo de' Medici, who is also portrayed on a medal shown here.
