This playbill is a cancellation notice from the Theatre Royal, Edinburgh, dating from 1811. The theatre owner had been let down three times and on this occasion decided to publicise the fact.
Although Mr Berry may not have been very reliable, the Theatre Royal, Edinburgh, was quite a success during this period. Between 1809 and 1815, the theatre was managed by the actors Henry and Harriet Siddons. The Siddons family benefitted the theatre through their patronage and during this time they started an upsurge of fortunes that would later make the theatre rich.

Occasionally an actor will be unable to perform and an understudy will take their place. The show may even have to be cancelled. On this occasion in Edinburgh, the actor was so unreliable that the theatre felt there was only one course of action to take. Imagine arriving at the theatre to find this notice.
