Concert Ticket

1978 (printed)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

A pictorial concert ticket for Rod Stewart's 1978 tour featuring a voluptuous woman, wearing only, and barely covered by, a fur coat, exemplifying the kind of woman that Stewart was writing about in his album Blondes Have More Fun.

This ticket was for a concert held at the Brighton Centre, one of a three-night residency and an international year-long tour. Stewart's popularity in 1978 wasn't reflected in the music press of the time, who were more interested in the punk scene, but his international success on the concert circuit and in the music charts was notable, with Number One albums and singles in both Britain and America. He even kept the Sex Pistols' God Save the Queen from reaching Number One in the British charts.

Tokens and tickets Theatres issued metal tokens as a sign of payment as early as 1755. Later, card or paper tickets were introduced. The first card tickets were produced for benefit performances. Often beautifully decorated, they were kept as souvenirs in their own right. Today many tickets are just computerised receipts and can be printed from the internet. Or, where security is an issue, tickets are exchanged for wrist bands. Token for the Margate Theatre, Kent 1791 Metal Museum no. S.132-1986 Ticket for the Metropolitan Theatre, London Benefit for W.
