Bonbonniere

1787-88 (made), ca.1810 (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

The costume of the sitter in miniature suggests a date around 1810 towards the end of the career of the Dutch miniature painter Leonardus Temminck (1753-1813) and more than twenty years after the box itself was created. The cover of the box also appears to have been re-enamelled, possibly when the miniature was set into it.

Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.
