Place of origin |
John, Regent of Portugal, presented this elegant Russian box to Admiral Sir John Jervis, 1st Earl of St Vincent (1734-1823). In 1806 Jervis led the British fleet to Lisbon in a pre-emptive show of force against French. The present Portuguese miniature probably replaced a Russian one originally mounted in the box, possibly a gift of Catherine the Great.
Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.
